What is x402?​

The x402 protocol is an open-source payment standard developed by Coinbase that enables instant stablecoin micropayments directly over HTTP by activating the dormant 402 "Payment Required" status code. It reimagines internet payments for autonomous AI agents, enabling frictionless micropayments as low as $0.001 with sub-second settlement times and near-zero costs.

How x402 Works​

The x402 protocol follows a simple flow:

  1. Client Requests Protected Resource: Your app or AI agent makes an HTTP request to a x402-protected endpoint
  2. 402 Payment Required Response: Server returns payment requirements (amount, token, network, recipient)
  3. Client Signs Authorization: Client generates cryptographic signature authorizing the payment
  4. Facilitator Verifies & Settles: BlockEden.xyz verifies the signature and executes on-chain settlement
  5. Resource Delivered: Your server delivers the protected resource with transaction confirmation
