I’ve been working in blockchain data infrastructure for a few years now, and there’s this pattern I keep seeing that honestly bothers me. Let me share some data first, then tell you why it matters.
The Infrastructure We Have vs What We Use
We now have genuinely robust decentralized RPC options. I’m talking about real, production-grade infrastructure:
- dRPC: 95+ blockchains, 50+ independent node operators, 7 geo-distributed clusters
- Ankr: 70+ chains, 1,500 RPS capacity, 56ms average response time, 99.99% uptime claims
- Chainstack: Multi-cloud enterprise deployments with serious institutional backing
These aren’t vaporware or beta products. They’re processing billions of requests. The technology works.
Yet when I look at the actual RPC endpoints being used by the dApps I analyze daily—DeFi protocols, NFT marketplaces, DAO governance platforms—almost all of them still run on Alchemy, Infura, or QuickNode.
I’m not judging. My own team uses Alchemy. But I think we need to have an honest conversation about what this means.
The Data Engineering Perspective
From my perspective building data pipelines and analytics, here’s why centralized providers keep winning:
Observability: Alchemy’s dashboard shows me request volumes, error rates, method distribution, and latency percentiles in real-time. When a query fails at 3am, I can see exactly what happened. I can replay requests. I can track down performance bottlenecks. This isn’t a nice-to-have—it’s essential for production systems.
Reliability: When I’m processing millions of on-chain events daily, I need consistent, predictable infrastructure. Alchemy and Infura have become boring infrastructure—and boring is exactly what you want. They just work.
Integration: My entire data stack integrates seamlessly with these providers. The SDKs work. The error handling is predictable. The rate limiting is well-documented. I don’t have to debug weird edge cases or write custom retry logic.
Why We Evaluated dRPC and Chose Alchemy
Last quarter, our team seriously evaluated migrating to dRPC. Here’s what happened:
The Good: Pricing was competitive. Multi-operator redundancy was appealing from a reliability standpoint. The routing logic seemed solid.
The Challenges:
- Setup took about 3 hours vs 10 minutes for Alchemy
- Documentation was technical but missing practical examples
- Analytics were minimal—I couldn’t easily see what was happening under the hood
- When we hit an edge case, support response took 2 days vs Alchemy’s 2 hours
We ended up sticking with Alchemy, but adding dRPC as a fallback provider. Pragmatic, but not exactly the decentralization win we’d hoped for.
The Uncomfortable Question
Here’s what I keep coming back to: At what point does decentralized RPC infrastructure make sense economically and operationally?
Is it:
- When you’re at massive scale and cost optimization matters more than convenience?
- When you’re building infrastructure that absolutely cannot tolerate censorship risk?
- When you’ve got dedicated DevOps resources to manage complexity?
- Never, because centralized providers will always be more economically efficient?
I genuinely don’t know the answer. I want to use decentralized infrastructure. I believe in the philosophy. But I also have deadlines, SLAs, and a team that needs to ship features instead of managing node operator configurations.
What Would Change My Mind
If I’m being honest about what would make me switch to decentralized RPC as my primary provider:
- Analytics parity: I need the same observability I get from Alchemy
- Documentation quality: Step-by-step guides, clear examples, troubleshooting docs
- Predictable performance: No weird latency spikes or inconsistent responses
- Better error messages: Tell me what went wrong and how to fix it
- Responsive support: When things break, I need help within hours, not days
The technology is there. The infrastructure exists. But the developer experience gap is real.
So What’s the Actual Problem?
This brings me back to the question: Did we solve blockchain infrastructure centralization by building decentralized RPC networks, or did we just create more vendor options in a market that still gravitates toward centralized providers because they offer better UX, reliability, and support?
Is this:
- A temporary problem that gets better as decentralized providers mature?
- A fundamental economic reality where centralization wins on convenience?
- An education gap where developers don’t understand the risks?
- A tooling problem where we need better abstraction layers?
I’m asking genuinely because I look at this data every day and I don’t have a clear answer.
