OWASP 2026 Rankings Are Out: Business Logic Vulnerabilities Hit #2 While Reentrancy Falls to #8—Time to Rethink How We Audit?
The OWASP Smart Contract Top 10 for 2026 dropped this week, and if you haven’t looked at the rankings yet, prepare for some uncomfortable questions about how we’ve been thinking about smart contract security.
The headline shift: Business Logic Vulnerabilities climbed to #2, while Reentrancy Attacks—which sat at #2 in previous years—fell all the way to #8.
The Numbers Tell a Story
Let me start with the data, because that’s what matters. In 2025, we saw 122 deduplicated security incidents in smart contracts resulting in $905.4M in losses. When we break down these losses by vulnerability type:
- Business Logic flaws: $63.8M in losses
- Reentrancy attacks: $35.7M in losses
- Flash Loan attacks: $33.8M (often enabling business logic exploits)
And 2026 isn’t looking better—Q1 alone saw $137M+ in losses, with total crypto theft for 2025 hitting $3.4 billion.
But here’s the uncomfortable truth: the ranking shift isn’t because reentrancy suddenly became rare—it’s because we got better at detecting it through automation, while business logic vulnerabilities require human reasoning we’re not systematically applying.
The Automation Paradox
Tools like Slither and Mythril now catch 92%+ of known vulnerability patterns in early audit passes. OpenZeppelin’s nonReentrant modifier has become standard. Static analysis catches reentrancy almost reflexively now.
That’s the good news.
The bad news? Business logic vulnerabilities—flaws in the economic design of protocols rather than their code correctness—can’t be detected by pattern matching. They require understanding:
- Incentive structures under market stress
- Game theory implications of governance mechanisms
- Attack vectors that emerge from composing multiple protocols
- Flash loan attack surfaces that didn’t exist when the protocol was designed
Automated tools verify that your code does what you told it to do. But they can’t verify whether what you told it to do is economically sound.
Are We Fighting Yesterday’s War?
This reminds me of traditional financial auditing. Enron had clean audits from Arthur Andersen. WorldCom passed compliance reviews. FTX had audited financials.
The audits verified the numbers matched the records. They didn’t verify the records made economic sense.
We’re seeing the same pattern in DeFi:
- Protocol launches with $85K audit report ✓
- Slither scan passes ✓
- Mythril finds no critical issues ✓
- Two weeks later: exploited for $12M via business logic flaw that was never tested
The audit industry has optimized for detecting declining threats (reentrancy, integer overflow, access control) while the threat landscape shifted to economic design flaws that traditional code audits don’t cover.
The Attacker’s Perspective
Attackers optimize for ROI. Why spend time finding reentrancy vulnerabilities that:
- Are caught by automated tools (harder to find)
- Have well-known mitigation patterns (harder to exploit)
- Are present in fewer protocols (smaller target set)
When you can instead exploit business logic flaws that:
- Require no novel code analysis (the code works as written)
- Are protocol-specific (unique to each target)
- Often involve flash loan capital that isn’t yours
The average reentrancy exploit in 2025 netted $2.1M. The average business logic exploit? $5.3M. Attackers follow the money.
So What Do We Do?
I don’t have all the answers, but I know asking better questions is step one. Here are mine:
Should protocols allocate more budget to economic security audits than code audits? If business logic is now #2, shouldn’t economic modeling, game theory analysis, and incentive structure reviews get proportional investment?
Can we build better tools for economic security? Formal verification has improved dramatically for code correctness. Where’s the equivalent for verifying economic invariants?
Are traditional audit models obsolete? One-time code reviews made sense when vulnerabilities were in the code. Business logic flaws often emerge from how protocols are used together—shouldn’t security be continuous monitoring rather than pre-launch review?
How do we test economic assumptions before mainnet? We have testnets for code. Do we need “economic testnets” that simulate market conditions, flash loan scenarios, and adversarial behavior?
Trust But Verify, Then Verify Again
I say this as someone who’s made a career finding vulnerabilities: the OWASP 2026 rankings aren’t a failure of our security practices—they’re evidence of attacker adaptation.
Reentrancy falling to #8 is actually a success story. It means our tooling and defensive patterns work. Business logic climbing to #2 is a wake-up call that the next frontier of smart contract security isn’t code correctness—it’s economic soundness.
Security is not a feature, it’s a process. And our process needs to evolve to match where attackers are focusing their attention.
